I have plenty of happy memories from my years at the University of Helsinki. I came to the university as a postgrad, and integration into the Department of General Linguistics proved to be easy and straightforward. There was a good atmosphere: we got together for Friday coffee and plenty of parties. But we certainly got through plenty of work, too. Read more »
I have many good memories of the University. Among the finer moments have been the doctoral defences of my students, discussions with delightful opponents and the attendant festivities. It was a particular source of delight to see scholarships granted to four excellent German researchers by the German Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and to have the opportunity to guide them over a ten-year period at the German department. These scholars made a significant contribution to the research profile and studies offered at the department. Read more »
My years in the University, starting back in the autumn of 1969, have witnessed many changes. Throughout this time the study of Spanish and Portuguese has continued to grow. Spanish is no longer held to be an exotic language, as it was for many in the 1970s. Read more »
As I reflect on a teaching career at the University of Helsinki spanning more than 40 years, and now nearing retirement, I notice that each decade has had its own highlights. Read more »
Teaching is in my bones, so the best thing about the University is the range of stylish and beautiful events which involve enthusiastic young students. These young hopefuls show no lack of energy when they work together, learning from each other. The student ‘nations’, especially my own assocation, Eteläsuomalainen osakunta, the history students' organisation Kronos ry, and the Student Union of the University of Helsinki, as well as the National Union of University Students in Finland are all important organisations for me. My first 'best memories’ from the University of Helsinki have to do with the time I was the president of the archaeology students’ organisation Fibula ry ( in Finnish) in the late 1980s. Student life was so carefree! Parties, excursions to ancient remains, Scandinavian student meetings... Read more »
From the university’s perspective, Timo Santala’s study record is, well, challenging. The Master’s degree in five years did not exactly work out for him. He has chosen all kinds of interesting courses and ended up abandoning many of them. Santala moved from subject to subject following his interests without thinking about completing his degree. When I think of my time at the University a whole range of memories come to the fore. First of all of course was the registration organised by the rector Erkki Kivinen, an unassuming but nevertheless serious occasion. In my day teaching was still very traditional, one lecture after the other and undergraduates had to work out the instructions for themselves. The tutor system was in its infancy, and frankly it did not help very much. Nor did everything go to plan... Read more »
The University of Helsinki has meant a great deal to me. It was easy to get to know teachers and other students alike at the beating heart of the University campus, the PamPam restaurant, aka the ”seminar room” at the old department of history. There was an endless stream of legendary personalities among the teachers. I met most of my best friends in those circles. Read more »
This may sound a little clichéd, but I find it difficult to come up with one single best memory from the time that I was doing my Master’s studies in Women’s Studies at the University of Helsinki. Read more »

I always knew that I wanted to study at the University of Helsinki, but I never planned a career in research. When Juhani U.E. Lehtonen, my predecessor and the Professor of Ethnology, asked me to become an assistant during the final stages of my studies, he said that the work would include postgraduate studies. When we discussed the subject of my dissertation, I proposed doing research on river driving on the Kemijoki river. Read more »

Without a shadow of a doubt, my best memories are from my first year at the University. Back then it seemed like everything was within reach and you could focus on whatever interested you. Without a doubt, my best memory at the University of Helsinki is when around a dozen Roma students participated in my courses in the autumn of 2014. It was the first time that so many Roma and majority students sat together in the same classroom. Read more »

When I went into business life I kept in contact with the University mostly through delivering docent lectures. In the spring term of 1989, in my capacity as docent, I gave a lecture series for the Arts Faculty entitled ‘Humanistit liikkeenjohtajiksi’ (‘Arts graduates to business managers’).Based on experience, I had come to the conclusion that the day-to-day work of a company boss required the skills of someone with an arts background even more than a facility with accountancy.
