Plans for the future

Katariina Styrman has not spent a lot of time thinking about her prospective career. Her duties in the Student Union have changed according to her interests at the time, and in the future Styrman intends to pursue her own interests. Her only requirements for a workplace are that there is a good atmosphere and that she can agree with their values.

“People often see it as, ‘Wow, you have this clear career’. It’s a delusion. When I look back, I only see that one path. As I go forward, I see an endless series of forks in the road and paths ahead: one minute I’m going here and the next minute there. I have never strived for any particular job but instead preferred to go with the majority and do the things I enjoy.”

Styrman brings up the topic of the way in which the contribution of humanities graduates is underestimated in business life. She thinks that the corporate world needs as diverse a group as possible to make things work.

“Engineers can be responsible for the practical side of things but humanists can give feedback which provides the basis for stepwise development of the product.”
