Dreaming of complexity and music

I dream of a more complex world and perfect pitch.

I find that the greatest threat of our time is an unwarranted belief in common-sense explanations of difficult phenomena. Populism worries me.

A metaphor for my dreams is the success of easy-to-use design. I was a believer in progressive design and ‘stevejobsism’ in the years 1984-2013 – that is, for 30 years – until it started to repulse me. A certain period in my life came to an end when Apple, the underdog and challenger of my youth, had become a status symbol for the crisps and coke brigade, the world’s most valuable company.

After my 2013 U-turn, I have tried to complicate what is obvious in my choices and to think about the concepts that I use and the ways that I work from radically new perspectives.

As to music, I dream of melodies, harmonies and the structures of composition. I haven’t been able to write an immortal piece of music, however, and I’m not even aiming to. The path towards that goal is more important than the end result.
