Tapio Nurminen

Tapio could well be Finland’s only self-employed IT specialist historian to have made a rap video. He wishes to be buried, when the time is right, in Joutsa in central Finland, where his forefathers have lived since at least the sixteenth century.

Ten years ago, Tapio Nurminen­ began work on his doctoral dissertation about the war experiences of men from Eastern Tavastia. But he could not find much time to write while working full time. He has, however, managed to publish about half a dozen articles related to his research topic.

There are so many memories from my student days that it is hard to choose the best. One moment that stuck in my mind was when the student organisation Kronos turned 50 in November of 1995. There were about 300 people celebrating at the event in the Old Student House, including the famous historian Eino Jutikkala. The party went on all night, and when I left in the morning to look for a ride home, the city was pure white from the snow that had fallen overnight.

My family on both my father’s side and my mother’s side have lived in Joutsa, originally in the greater Sysmä area, since at least the 1500s. My dream is to continue to work less and spend more time in the countryside.
