Zacharias Topelius’s Writings

Zacharias Topelius Skrifter (ZTS) is a freely-available digital collection of the author’s writings, put together by the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland. The entire library of Topelius’s work, including previously unprinted material, will be available in a searchable digital database for the first time. Publications will include different versions, manuscripts, facsimiles, explanatory introductions, commentaries, and word explanations. Much of the material has never been published, including lectures on history and geography, as well as family letters. There is also material that has not been reprinted, such as short stories which appeared in the Helsingfors Tidningar newspaper.

An extensive sampling of new textual analyses of Topelius’s works will also be published in print. The project began in 2005 and the first part was published in 2010. After that the works have appeared in six parts, five of which are available both in print and digitally, while one is digital only.

The next section to be released in 2016 is Topelius’s journals from the years 1832–40, or in other words his school days. The journals are a fascinating window into the culture and society of the early Grand Duchy of Finland. As a source of information on Finnish society and everyday life in the 1830s, they are unique in scope.
