The outsider in the Swedish writers’ national football team

In addition to writing, I have tried to improve my knowledge by regular visits to international events on sports journalism and history. The event called Play the Game that was organised in Denmark was a real heaven for someone who is interested in critical sports journalism.

To offset the role of theory in my life, I also practise sports regularly. Dearest to my heart are football and cycling. The beautiful game has enabled me to see more of the world than I could ever dream of as a little boy. In 2005, the Swedish writers’ national football team asked if they could have a couple of reinforcements from Finland. I immediately said yes. Over ten years, this decision has taken me to writers’ European Championships in Italy, Germany, Sweden and Israel. Between matches I have got to meet writers representing different cultures. Luckily, I happened to have played football in the history students’ team when I was at the University.
