St Petersburg is built of Finnish granite

Yrjö Kaukiainen is currently researching the use of Finnish granite in St Petersburg palaces and monuments. The book, which is still under work, deals with a time (around 1700–1850) when European heads of state used huge sums of money in their capitals competing with each other to build the most magnificent palaces and public buildings. The construction of St Petersburg is strongly reflected in southeast Finland, as until the First World War, the granite needed to build St Petersburg, as well as a significant portion of the marble, came from either the coast between Vyborg Bay and Hamina or Ladoga Karelia.
