Translation is by definition or innately an international activity, which in itself has led me to work with people from many countries and cultures. In addition to this, however, I have also actively sought out international connections and taken part in the international arena not only through my publications and conference presentations but also through my work as a teacher and scholar outside Finland.

In the spring of 2015, I was a visiting professor in Italy, at the University of Torino, after being selected for the post in the autumn of 2014. Before that I worked for two years (2008-2010) as professor of translation studies in the Middle East at the United Arab Emirates University in the city of Al Ain. In addition to my teaching and research work, I took part in the development of the master’s and PhD programmes as well as in the organisation of an international translation studies conference at the university. Besides my work as a visiting lecturer, I have also been active in international affairs as a member of various kinds of international committees and panels, both in Finland’s neighbouring countries and farther away.

In the 2000s, I was invited several times to participate in international evaluation groups with the task of evaluating the quality of Estonia’s translation and interpretation studies programmes. I have also been invited to perform a similar task in Sweden at the University of Gothenburg.

I have been and remain a member of the Qatar National Research Fund (with the task of evaluating certain big-budget project plans and their funding applications relating to translation and linguistics that are received by the foundation.

Throughout my career, I have paid particularly many visits as a lecturer and scholar to European universities, including those in Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Lithuania.
