My best memories from the University of Helsinki

I still remember my first course at the University of Helsinki. When I walked in to a class Dr Ilkka Niiniluoto was giving on the philosophy of Dr Eino Kaila, he looked in my pristine study record book, its pages still free of entries, and asked me: “So, this is your first class?” Unflustered, I replied that one class must always be the first.

My studies took place in the 1990s, when student life was quite active. The association of philosophy students, Dilemma ry, arranged various events, and I was an active participant. Among other things, I served one term as the association’s treasurer. So positions like that of treasurer of a student association may eventually lead you to become rector of a university. Management of finances is an important skill, since today the work of a rector is almost indistinguishable from that of a managing director, and most of your office hours are spent on finances.
