Fine Memories from the University of Helsinki

I spent over ten years planning and leading continuing education training in Finnish as a second or foreign language. Part of the training was contact teaching on Friday nights and on Saturdays. The door of Lecture Hall III in the Main Building of my Alma Mater was systematically thrown open by the usher every Friday at 8 PM and he literally had to chase us out onto Senate Square—so excited we all were in our field. How much I did learn from these experienced teachers of Finnish as a second language!

Training interpreters for the European Union was a considerable project, and so was the funding. The University has to be lauded for its support for the project: for instance, they arranged for funding to construct seven interpretation booths in the Metsätalo building before the actual training could begin. Once it did begin, the booths allowed us to get off to a great start.
