Paying it forward in his free time

In his free time Janne Hopsu has worked as an interviewer for the University of Helsinki’s Think Corner. He also likes to go there just to listen.

‘What I like about the classical idea of education and civilisation is debating ideas and passing on knowledge. The best times at the Think Corner have been the occasions when people had different views on issues and this stimulated a wide-ranging discussion,’ says Hopsu.

Hopsu believes that the University must provide information in the form of open debate on everything, quite aside from the actual teaching and research.

‘I have been involved in the Think Corner programmes because each time I have learned something myself,’ says Hopsu. ‘It is a natural meeting point to create networks and develop professionally. The University could, however, underline the point that it really is open to everyone.’

Janne Hopsu also goes to schools to talk about his work.

‘I like to talk with upper secondary school and polytechnic students. It is nice to tell them what a reporter’s day is like,’ says Hopsu. ‘I can dispel some of the glamour, but at the same time steer those who are genuinely interested down the right paths.’

Hopsu has been involved in the Association of Finnish Foreign Affairs Journalists. He was the chair from 2011–2013. He has also found time in the past to participate in union activities with the MTV3 News’ employee union and the Union of Finnish Radio and Television Journalists.
