Tuija Talvitie

Tuija Talvitie, fresh from completing her master’s degree, found work at the British Council Finland temping for a substitute and eventually spent over 20 years at the organisation. As the executive director of the international conflict resolution organisation Crisis Management Initiative, Tuija has become familiar with the search for the root causes of conflict. She gains fresh ideas through think-tank communities, while at the same time sharing her own expertise and experiences.

Tuija Talvitie began her studies at the University of Helsinki in 1979 and graduated as a Master of Arts in English philology in 1987. During that time she had the opportunity to enjoy all the perks offered by the University. To Talvitie, the library of the English department in the depths of the Porthania building was the seat of luxury—there she could read in peace and absorb knowledge.

Chance had a hand in Tuija Talvitie becoming the Executive Director of Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) in 2009. She had been a member of the board since 2005 and was involved in looking for a new Executive Director. The right person seemed nowhere to be found. Finally, other members of the board suggested that Talvitie should apply for the position.

Tuija Talvitie wants to encourage women to take more risks and be braver in embracing their ambitions, because both men and women are needed in leadership positions. “Women have a lot to offer in decision making. That does not mean that men are worse and women are better. What it means is that the balance between the sexes has to be more even at the executive level.”

Tuija Talvitie is attracted to fresh ideas and brave new ways of doing things. She wants to be involved in supporting think tanks. “While working at the British Council Finland, I had the opportunity to get to know think tanks around the world. I am drawn to the courage they display in highlighting new ways of thinking, and how they dare to try different ways of doing things.”

My University years had many great moments. The best of all was the student-centred atmosphere at the English Department. Its various small groups were full of open-minded people. In particular, the discussions that took place during seminars taught me skills that I have utilised during my career as well as in my life in general.
