A brave women’s rights advocate, who was in the vanguard of the struggle for women’s liberation, a journalist, and an active member of numerous organisations. Tekla Hultin was the first woman in Finland to be awarded a PhD. She was actively engaged in politics, and was elected as a Member of Parliament as early as 1908.

Tekla Hultin began her academic studies in 1886. Her studies included history, literature, art history and psychology. After graduating as a Bachelor of Arts in 1891, she took up work as a journalist.

In spring 2014, The City of Helsinki City Planning Committee decided to name the city centre plaza between Sanomatalo and Kiasma after Tekla Hultin. This dedication is made in honour of Hultin’s contribution to society, both as a journalist and parliamentarian.
