Anni Sinnemäki began as Deputy Mayor of Helsinki in January 2015. She is in charge of city planning and real estate. Her job entails town planning, land use planning, supervision of building, and housing policy.

In 1999, at the age of 25, Anni Sinnemäki was elected to parliament. Thereafter, she spent a total of almost 16 years as Member of Parliament for the Greens. “It was a long time. When I was leaving I worked out that it had been two-thirds of my adult life.”

Anni Sinnemäki began studying at the University of Helsinki directly after completing upper-secondary school. She majored in Russian literature and in addition studied philosophy, Czech language and general linguistics. Her field of study was chosen purely on the basis of interest.

Anni Sinnemäki began writing lyrics for the band Ultra Bra during her student days in 1995 and continued all the way until the band’s final record in 2001. For example, she is responsible for the lyrics of the songs “Sinä lähdit pois” (‘You went away’), “Tyttöjen välisestä ystävyydestä” (‘About a friendship between girls’) and “Nainen, joka elää vapaaherran elämää” (‘A woman who lives the life of a baron).

Ultra Bra appeared at the music festival Provinssirock in the summer of 1999, where they performed one of their most well-known songs, “Minä suojelen sinua kaikelta” (‘I’ll protect you from everything’). The lyrics were Anni Sinnemäki’s.

Anni Sinnemäki’s favourite place in Helsinki is the sea fortress Suomenlinna.
