My Best Memory From the University of Helsinki

I have never forgotten my inauguration as Professor of Scandinavian Literature. It took place on January 30, 2012, during a blizzard. My family was stuck at Stockholm Arlanda Airport dressed in their finest (I have four sons), and they did not make it to the ceremony, as all the flights were cancelled.

The ceremony was solemn and beautiful, as it should be at a prestigious university that is among the best in Europe and is intent on maintaining its academic traditions. Afterwards my colleague Pirjo Kukkonen, Professor of Swedish Translation Studies, invited me to the Bellevue restaurant, where we had an excellent Russian dinner. Lifelong memories were made during that day and the evening that followed. I felt I was exactly where I belonged in life.
